I created this smoothie blend with menstruating women in mind. Are you one of those women that craves chocolate close to your period? I know I am. The reasoning behind this is that the body intuitively knows that cacao is high in magnesium and iron, nutrients that can become quickly depleted when we are menstruating. Cacao also contains feel good neurotransmitters, such as phenethylamine, which triggers the release of endorphins and pleasurable compounds. It’s a little does of bliss when you are going through some less than desirable PMS symptoms.
Chia seeds contain omega 3 fatty acids which are important for reducing inflammation. Often when we experience extreme PMS symptoms our bodies are in a state of inflammation. The fats from these seeds also support the hormonal structure of estrogen and progesterone which begin to increase following menstruation. Fibre, protein and healthy fats help to keep you feeling satiated to avoid those PMS cravings and replenish the body with whole food nutrients.

Vegan Dark Chocolate Cherry Protein Smoothie
- 1 cup frozen dark sweet cherries
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk or any other alternative milk
- ½ cup water
- 1 tbsp cacao powder
- 1 tbsp hemp hearts or ½ tbsp almond butter
- ½ tbsp chia seeds
- ½ scoop plant-based protein powder (preferably chocolate flavoured) (I used Botanica although it is a bit gritty)
- ¼ tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup spinach (optional)
Place all ingredients into a blender and blend on high until smooth. Serve with ice. Makes 2 servings.
