What kind of rituals do you incorporate into your life? Do you practice certain routines that help to balance your body, mind and soul? I’d love to hear in the comments below.
It is Dec 21, 2019, winter solistice, the shortest day of the year, the welcoming of winter and I intuitively felt called today to honour this solistice and my body in stillness, something that I often push through in efforts to accomplish more (recovering perfectionist over here).
It is so important to remember that through the winter months our bodies innately are meant to experience more stillness and BEING instead of DOING. Honestly, think of the animals in nature – hibernating, bedding down and reserving their energy. If you feel called to do less that is likely the reason, and that is ok.
Now is a time to instill routines and rituals that allow you to connect with your body, provoke calmness and just allow yourself to be still. This can especially be very helpful in relieving feelings of anxiety or overwhelm with the hectic-ness of the holiday season.
This morning I sat in peace in my sauna and started re-reading a book I love called “A New Earth” Eckhart Tolle. I honoured my body with a warm shower, dry brushing to move my lymphatic system, laid in silence in meditation, gave gratitude for the blessings in my life, pendulum tested my body for any imbalances (I’ve got some gut healing to work on), nourished myself with a fresh green juice and honoured this scared cacao that was gifted to me by my Reiki Teacher with a photoshoot. None of this was on a “to-do” list, rather I was guided to take part in because I sat with my body and asked it what it needs.
Let your body guide you
Start by finding a quiet space, physically or in your mind. Take 4 deep breaths in and out. Place one palm on your heart and the other on your stomach. Allow your mind to be free from any chatter and as yourself “Body, what do you need at this time?”. What is the first thing that pops into your mind? Do you see a vision, do you hear a word, do you smell something, are you witnessing a memory? Take note of this, your body is guiding you to your needs. Now decide what is one simple action you can take to honour what your body has just told you.
This might look like:
- Drinking water first thing in the morning
- Allowing yourself quiet moments in the morning without any screen time – drinking tea, reading, journaling, meditating, walking, sauna, extra sleep, yoga, deep breathing
- Making meals ahead of time to nourish your body
- Drinking a smoothie
- Taking a multi-vitamin
- Enrolling in or making time for an activity that brings you joy
- Speaking up about a hard conversation
- Asking for help
- Dedicating one day a week to not having a “to-do” list
- Being in nature
When I sat with my body it told me, you need movement, you need water, you need nourishment and you need to speak up about things that are bothering you. To turn this into a routine I will drink water upon waking, walk in nature, stretch my body and drink a green smoothie daily. I will dedicate time into the mornings for at least 5 minutes of journaling. These are things that can easily be incorporated into my day and things that will help to support my physical, mental and spiritual health.
I encourage you to find time to ask your body what it needs and decide how you can incorporate simple routines into your day that over a course of 30, 60, 90 days could make a huge impact on your well being. Happy Winter Solstice!
